Piste Variations?

At the petanque club were I play the pistes tend to have a compacted faster center strip probably from more use with slower/softer areas at the sides.

The ends of the pistes can be very slow and the boules tend to settle in the gravel.

It seems shooting is more difficult on deeper gravel.

Is a reasonable tactic when trowing the jack to try and play in a harder area if you are a better shooter or alternatively play in a softer area if you are a better pointer?

Thanks Don

Or should the pistes be groomed more to reduce this variation?
