I agree with what Jeff said, I would just like to add the following: I presume the cause of the problem is that players are only playing up and down the same pistes. Remember, that petanque is meant to be played on “open terrain”, on an unprepared surface, i.e. the surface is meant to have a degree of “character” and variations, with slight slopes, dips, ruts, stones, variety in the surface, etc.
The “traditional village square” in France will often have tree roots, gullies where the rain drains across, ruts from the market vehicles, etc. All of this makes up the “character” of the terrain and learning to “read” the terrain is what makes for a more skilful and interesting game. That’s why the pointer often needs a variety of different rolling and lobbing shots to play the terrain.
Unfortunately, some purpose built terrains tend to be rather flat and featureless in comparison. If players only ever experience such terrains it limits their game. Instead of creating character, you find players removing stones to make an “easier” game and raking the terrain smooth, when it’s not meant to be smooth!
Of course, space sometimes limits your options, meaning that you have to play in a fixed marked out area. Otherwise, always try to play “open” terrain, play on the “difficult” parts of the terrain, not just the easiest, smoother parts. If you’re lucky enough to have some hard, fast parts and some softer areas, use this to your advantage. Play on the different areas and learn the different techniques required.
Playing on a variety of different terrains, with and against different players, will also help improve your game, rather than always playing up and down the same spot with the same players.
Allez-y!
