Having originally played “feral” petanque (petanque on an unprepared surface) my impressions are that an unprepared surface can play much truer than a well used piste while an unprepared area may not be as flat is often smoother. The continuous landing of the boules can make the surface very irregular and the bounce of the boule impossible to predict.
While piste variation is part of the game should a regular "crazy bounce" also be part of the game?
