- While piste variation is part of the game should a regular "crazy bounce" also be part of the game?

Very good question. Of course, the basic answer is, "no", you don't want a terrain such that the bounce is totally unpredicatable wherever you play.

Conversely, you don't want a perfectly smooth, flat terrain which means you can more or less land the boule anywhere and it will always run true.

But you should have some variety, such that some areas are more likely to lead to a "bad bounce" whereas other areas won't. The skill for the pointer is then in "reading" the terrain, choosing the correct landing spot and having the skill and accuracy to land on the chosen spot.

I think the "crazy bounce" scenario raises another point: this can happen when nobody fills in holes made by the last boule, leading to a terrain full of divots. If you *do* fill in the last hole, then this problem shouldn't arise.

Even if you do have a terrain that's become somewhat rough from play, a good downpour of rain usually flattens it out again.
