Sensible combinations?

I have different sets of competition boules which I mix 'n' match depending upon the particular game I play...

The rules for petanque say nothing about a player using different weights/sizes/striations when playing - only that the boules used cannot be switched during a game (unless broken).

That said, if you are playing 1 vs. 1; then you'll probably shoot once, and point twice... so I have 2 800 gram, multi-striated, 71 mm. boules for pointing, and 1 smooth, 80m 700gram boule for shooting.

In doubles, I keep the same combination, unless my partner is an excellent pointer, then I'll switch to 2 shooter boules, and 1 pointer boule.

In triplettes, I usually have 1-shooter boule and 1-pointer boule.

Sure, people may say that it's expensive to own 2 sets of boules - but I've found that when you play this sport for a lifetime, a 2nd set of boules is chickenfeed compared with winning more games because you're using the right equipment.
