Interesting choice of boules…

I’d like to offer an alternative view, thus proving, “For every expert, there is an equal and opposite expert” – I think Einstein said this once when playing petanque :-)

I’ve been playing approx. 10 years and have experimented quite bit over the years with different sizes and weights of boules, originally with 74mm leisure boules. As I learnt more about the game and realised that the boule should be carefully chosen to fit the size of your hand, I tried 75mm and 76mm. According to manufacturers’ sizing charts, 76mm is the “correct” size for my hand.

However, aware that “pointers use smaller boules, shooters use larger boules”, I’ve also tried 77mm for shooting and have also experimented with an 80mm boule.

In terms of weight, whilst 650 – 800g is the “permitted” range, 680 – 720g is the more normally manufactured range, sometimes up to 740g depending on the manufacturer and the choice of boules.

Over time I’ve pretty much settled upon 76mm 700g as a good “all round” boule, suitable for pointing and shooting.

Most “top of the range” boules are only manufactured smooth or with a single stripe pattern. In competitions in France – where they have nearly 100 years experience – it’s rare to find anybody playing with anything much outside this range, even 730g or 740g seems unusual and the majority of players use smooth or lightly striped boules.

Generally, the emphasis from experts and coaches is that the most important thing is to have the correct size boule for your hand and secondly, to choose a mid-range weight and generally avoid “extremes”.

It’s an interesting/debatable question as to whether both a 71mm and 80mm boule can be the “correct” size for one player..? I do recall Philippe Quintais in a magazine article a few years back saying he varied the size between 72mm and 75mm, depending on the position he was playing in a team.

Does size really matter that much or is it more a question of how you use it – the boule, that is :-)

Regards,

Ray
