Jac is 100% right in what he says. I would just add that, from the manufacturers and the retailers point of view, there can already be a vast number of permutations of different boules. Most manufacturers offer half-a-dozen different boules, from 71 to 80mm, 650 to 800g and different stripe patterns.

If you add colour as an additional variable, you’re going to increase the number even more.

How you distinguish each team’s boules is usually more of a problem for spectators than the players. For televised events, such as the French Masters Series, both teams use contrasting colours, black and silver, plus the teams wear smart matching strips and the circle is a coloured plastic ring, all to make petanque “more visual” for TV.

Experienced players normally have no problem in distinguishing different boules, providing you pay attention! Variations in stripe pattern, different metals, size, etc, are normally sufficient, with the name, weight and number to resolve any problems.
