I think that in regular club play, if lots of the same leisure boules are being used, there's only a limited number of striations available. What I tend to do is establish 2 distinct patterns per triplette game (1 team uses all smooth, the other, 1 stripe - for example).

While some players have their superstitions ("I can't use the smooth boules") I tell them - that until they buy their own competition boules, they have to use this method (the "Beggers can't be choosers rule").

Clarity is far better than arguments. Some players ridiculously play a game where both sides are using the same exact pattern on boules. That is only a set-up for an argument.

As far as distinguishing boules - You could also use "colored" dot stickers temporarily for a tournament when lots of similar leisure boules are being used.

Realistically, when introducing the sport to big groups - a club can't afford 20 sets of $100 competition boules - but 20 sets of lesuire boules is much more afforadable.
