Coin Toss; Pointing a Boule to a Jack...
whatever will get the tournament moving along without causing a sense of "unfairness"
After each tournament, I poll the participants to ask them what they liked and more importantly, didn't like. This is so that I can, in future, make an even better tournament.
First and foremost - there must be fairness and firm umpiring (when asked). The elimination of arguments among the players is crucial. In one of our earlier competitions, none of the players had personal scorekeepers - so of course, eventually there was an argument as to what the actual score was. To end that problem, we placed scoreboards (inexpensive cardboard numbers on bent wire coat hangers on sticks) at each piste. Then with regard to measurements, people were not carrying measuring tape. I try to carry extras, and tell the players "not to measure with their feet!" So much about running a club smoothly is to be observant and foresee possible problems BEFORE they occur.
