This is an attempt at making a good faq for the game of petanque. All questions that are directly related to the game and it's basic rules should be included here. The questions and answers are meant for beginners - so please keep it easy to understand for non-players.

Playing with either hand

There is no rule about using both hands to throw boules.

There is a rule about only throwing 1 boule at a time, and another rule about not having "someone else's" boules in your other (non-throwing) hand when throwing a boule - but this is merely to make things clear to the opposition as to how many boules your team has left to play.

As you say, sometimes the angle is much more advantageous for a lefty (or righty) and so, in being able to play well with both hands - this would serve as a positive attribute for a player.

Another, often overlooked but completely valid idea: using different types of boules by one player (i.e.: 2 pointing boules and 1 shooting boule). Especially when playing 1-vs-1 there are times when having 2 pointing (heavier, many-striped, smaller) boules and the many-times necessary: smooth-lighter-larger shooting boule can help.

and so, how, many would ask, can a 1-handed person develop ambidextrous petanque playing? I'd reply: with extreme DIFFICULTY!
