Variation is the spice of life...
...and a more interesting way to experience petanque.
Every petanque club has a different piste: sand; dirt; clay/sand; no pebbles; many pebbles; re-tasked bocce court clay; baseball infields; parking lot gravel...
One of the main benefits of petanque is its relative inexpensive versatility. Many times, you'd be driving along, see a spot along the road and pull the boules out of the trunk for an impromptu game.
and this variable surface is what authentic petanque has been played upon for 100 years.
You wouldn't want to get only limit experience on 1 surface, only to visit another club for a tournament which is played on an entirely different surface.
If you can, I'd have 2 different surfaces for your club members to use; something relatively flat and another surface that's bumpy and rough. Then, at least, you'll be giving them an authentic petanque experience - and prepare them for alternate surfaces during tournaments.
