Should you always play with the same boules or use different sets? Like most things, “for every expert, there is an equal and opposite expert!”.
When I went on the Marco Foyot coaching course a few years ago, he said that he’d been told by one of the “old timers” to spend the winter practising shooting with heavier boules than normal, e.g. 730-740g and you’d find shooting much easier when you returned to your normal, lighter shooter’s boules in the summer.
There is a broader question: do you only need one set of boules or several? Some of the manufacturers – who arguable have a vested interest in persuading you to have more than one set – advise different boules for different terrains.
There’s also the question of whether or not to play with different boules according to your position in the team, i.e. if you point in one game and shoot in another, would you use the same boules?
I’m sure every player is different but I do have several sets and will change from time to time. Although I usually play with the same size and weight, I have an older set I use for practise and “friendlies” and keep a top-of-the-range set for more important competitions.
