Last para of article 23: Players must not pick up the played boules before the completion of the end.
Article 27 At the finish of an end, all boules picked up before the agreement of points are void if their positions were not marked. No claims can be made on this subject.
What happens when one player picks up a played boule before the finish of an end article 23 above? (one player had one more boule to play)
TIA,
Guy

Having recently purchased several sets of petanque in France I would like to play the game with my friends here in South Africa. I presently play bowls and know the rules of that game.
I need to know the basic rules of petanque. Can you kindly help?

Guy:
Article 23 is to discourage removal of boules before the end of the play and Article 27 is to encourage players to wait until the points are agreed upon. However, the second part of article 27 explains what happens to any boule picked up.. 'Void if their position were not marked' unless it is the opponents boule that you removed and this has quite a lot of options. Good club captains will often give good advice if asked, and although it lenghtens the game all clubs should encouraged players to ask questions.
I believe you play at my club in Longueuil, and we have a few good captains who know all the rules. They all would Welcome your questions and be ready to answer. Any time Guy.

There is no answer to the question, 'Which is the more skillful', shooting or pointing! As a pointer your job is to get to the position you require, in most cases it's the cosh or jack, sometimes it's another boule. Some have an amazing ability to get exactly where they want to, on any terrain. This is skill. The shooter likewise aims at getting his boule exactly where he wants, by taking an opponents out and replacing it with his or her own boule, regardless of distance. This too is skill. But neither the pointer nor the shooter can do without the other. They are both skillful in there own right.
Neither is more skillful than the other.

There are a lot of good guides out there, the problem is that they are all in different places, hard to find and have a tendency to be about locat rules or events.
How about making a good guide, or faq as we call it on the net ?
We could use a forum for this - but first we have to figure out what sections to divide it into.
Does anyone know ow a good starting-point for a faq?
When we get it going we could mirror the whole thing across the internet - if we all contribute we should all use it!

John,
I reprint again the _full_ article 27:
At the finish of an end, all boules picked up before the agreement of points are void if their positions were not marked. No claims can be made on this subject.
Where do you see the second part of article 27?
As far as: Longueuil club having a few good captains who know all the rules, I think you have one word too many in that sentence: the word ``a``.
See you next Wednesday John,
Guy

Good idea, few ideas from the FAQs I've covered at our club and the sort of queries I've received:
- what are the rules
- how many boules do you need
- can 3 people play
- what sort of boules should I buy
- how do I build a terrain
- what sort of surface can you play on
- can you plan on grass
- can you wear gloves
- can you play with different boules or must they be the same
- can you play underarm
- what's the difference between hard and soft boules
- what's the difference between leisure & competition boules
- does the cochonnet have to be wood
- 2 boules are equal: who plays next/does the 3rd boule count
- should you shoot with your last boule
- which is the more skilful, shooting or pointing
- is petanque a sport
Regards,
Ray Ager

Excellent start Ray!
I'll set up a forum for making the FAQ right away.
Every question will get one thread in the forum -and anyone may contribute. After a while this should give us a very good starting point for a faq that is widely supported - at least commented by everyone that feels like it!
Cheers
