When it really comes down to it, it's 99% player and 1% equipment. If a great player uses leisure boules, they're always going to beat a good player using $350 ATX boules.
BUT, like most hobbies,there's always those that prefer something different equipment-wise, and so if they can spend a little money (small in the scheme of prices hobby-wise) to have a personalized competition boule, they'll do so. It's like an automobile: you can spend $250,000 on a car or $15,000 - but both will get you where you want to go.
