The Balance of Boules

Thanks to all for your replies. I agree with the statements regarding the bronze boules be they from Intégrale or Unibloc since they don't have a weld to affect the balance. Also if we could find a set of leisure boules that were in compliance they would work well (except for their shiny finish which invites shooting). We all know that it's Tiger Wood's swing and his mechanics plus what's in between his ears and not what brand of club he swings that makes him a champion. The same case for Pétanque boules. I never have owned a set of OBUT ATX,(actually I'm lusting after a set of the new Nexium boules as they look really cool but it's the money, honey) and probably never will due to the price but this gets me back to my original question, actually 2 questions. By what empirical test is the balance determined? And, if anybody knows or wants to guess what percentage of the high grade boules are rejected during the manufacturing process. For the high price asked by the different fabricants for their top of the line boules there must be tested along the way and they must have a higher level of inspection to meet their standards than the less expensive sets. On the subject of weight, I have access to an accurate electronic gram scale and I decided to weigh the boules that I most often play with. My MS X-15 Cara set weighed in at the marked 710 grams as did a relatively new set of OBUT Match + (710 also) but my MS 2110 set after a year and a half of play are down to 705 from their original 710 from normal wearand tear being very soft. Luckily for me all boules in each set weighed the same. I assume that this loss of 5 grams is within acceptable compliance. The 2110's do look like the surface of the moon but are still legal as all the proper numbers can still be read, barely. I still don't think that I could notice the 5 grams less whether playing or in some blindfold test. By the surface feel yes but not by the weight difference. So thanks again for the discussion. I have always want more equipment discussion on this site and I hope that this discussion will spur on more of the same. Wishing everyone beaucoup carreaux. F. William Baker Dallas, Texas
