I think that there are different levels of seriousness (rule abiding) to all sports; and that it is important to support all of these levels.
For example: there is baseball as played in the World Series, and there is baseball as played in the neighborhood.
If a sport is only played at the highest, most serious level - it destroys the infusion of new, youth to learn about and begin to play the sport. Eventually, without new players, the sport dies out as it fails to have players to carry on the tradition.
Having petanque as an olympic sport is important, It would increase membership in the sport all over the world as more people would see it being played. BUT, as basketball, hockey, football, baseball, tennis have different levels of leisure and sport which brings in youthful interest, so should petanque.
There are old bocce courts, not used for 20 years, in my neighborhood. I've been using them for petanque courts. The bocce players never introduced the sport to their children. And so now their tradition in this neighborhood has vanished.
We don't want our sport to vanish because people only want to play it on an olympic level.
