I think Jacob is asking about how individual members on a team plays (he think's there may be some kind of baseball batting order for petanque).
Nope! anyone on your team can elect to play their boule...
There is no rule as to which players on a team needs to play their boule. The team captain usually looks at a situation, discusses his ideas with the other team players, and then determines who on their own team should make the throw.
Typically, players have roles of pointers and/or shooters. So if an opponent's boule needs to be shot, then you'll use your shooter to do the job.
Usually, if it is a pointing situation, the player on a team who pointed but didn't get close enough will play again simply because they have a better "feel" for the distance and hopefully will be able to use that to get closer to the cochonnet.
The shooters typically wait until they are needed, or, if everyone on their team has played, they'll roll in their remaining boules.
