You're asking about the part of Article 19 (no longer Article 20 under the latest version of the rules) that applies only to a boule that has been shot or hit. The opponents of the team that accidentally stopped the boule have a choice to make. They can do nothing at all and allow everything to stay just where it ends up. Or they can pick up the stopped boule and manually place it. To do this, the boule's position BEFORE it was hit MUST have been marked by marks upon the ground. Otherwise, the option of manually placing the stopped boule does not exist.
Assuming it was marked before it was hit, they would first make NEW marks upon the ground where the stopped boule now lies. Then by sighting along the imaginary line from the OLD marks to the NEW marks, they can pick up the boule in question and place it by hand ANYWHERE along that imaginary line as long as it's within the playable area.

You are correct in questioning my answer. It was not precise as you pointed out. The boule must be placed on the EXTENSION of the imaginary line connecting the old mark and the new mark. Think about it this way, if the boule had not been accidentally stopped, it would definitely have continued BEYOND the new marked position. Since there is no way to know exactly where it would have come to rest, the rule assumes that it would have continued along the same line it was traveling when it was stopped. Of course there is also no way of knowing exactly how far it would have gone. The only fair way to resolve that part of the question is to give the advantage of the decision to the non-offending team. Hope this is now precise enough to answer your question?

Thanks Gary, as I now understand, in this case I can not put the ball between the old and new mark.
