This is an attempt at making a good faq for the game of petanque. All questions that are directly related to the game and it's basic rules should be included here. The questions and answers are meant for beginners - so please keep it easy to understand for non-players.

Hi I have just built a single piste on a concrete base that used to be an old farm building. It measures 3.3m wide and 13.4 m long. It is enclosed by railway sleepers (13 will do it). I put down 4 tons of 6mm to dust limestone straight onto the concrete and hand raked it. I then used an old garden roller to compact it. I think it works really well. Personally I would prefer a more softer piste but a gentle raking loosens the surface. I am pondering whether to sprinkle tiny gravel or cockle shell but am unsure I need it. The depth of the limestone is around an inch and a bit deeper in places. I would ideally prefer it to be a bit wider and a bit longer. Hope this helps.

I live next to the Forest of Dean, an area that I love yet there are no clubs that play Petanque so I have started to contact Pubs with large car parks.
Your measurements will be very useful in calculating the costs of establishing new Terrains as I contact others to start clubs.

Hi, if i could, i would ideally put another 'layer' of 6mm limestone chippings, but i can't get them without getting mostly 'dust'. Apparently the filters aren't that exact. I am waiting for a sample of corn flint shingle 3mm - 6mm. Although the piste works well as it stands, and is considered by those who play in France, very similar to French pistes, i feel it is difficult to play on. I'll keep you posted. PS if i could redo it again i would definitely make it wider and longer. Hope this helps. Fraser.
