I’d be very interested in seeing the results of any Scientific tests that compare the performance of different types of boules, e.g. can you measure how much of an advantage soft boules provide?

Is anybody aware of such tests being done?

Can anybody suggest any standard, Scientific tests that could be done?

We played our first open the other weekend and noted that people were particular about pacing out the length the coche was thrown.
So what is exactly are the rules. If I throw a coche and then my first boule without measuring, what happens if it turns out not to be in the range 6 - 10 metres ? Can the opposition ask for the coche to be rethrown
and my boule to stay where it is ?

I have seen something - not particularly scientific, involving various types of boule being rolled down a chute, - but I can't find it for the moment. Why not try Obut, whose address you undoubtedly have, or Robert Bruno C/o PJP Promotions 13 Av.de Verdun 83100 TOULOUSE, who wrote an extremely scientific book (Les Secrets de la Pétanque)

Keith,
The best way to find out «what exactly are the rules» is to read the rules! This site has the rules....

Look at «Article 8 – For the Thrown Jack to be Valid» and you will get your answer to your own question.

Cheers,
Guy

Yes you are quite right I should have read the rules, its just that I got caught out by the fact that rules normally don't provide the answer.

But clearly they did this time
