Canadian Petanque is administrated by the Federation Petanque du QuÈbec (Canada) which groups more than 20,000 players. Birth of Petanque was in 1956 with Jean Rafa and the Federation Canadian Bouliste. After hosting the 11th World championships in 1975, Quebec City, the sport has continued to grow until today there are more than 20,000 players of all levels.
Jean Rafa writes in "Sante et joie de Vivre par la PÈtanque" (1976).
" In Canada, it was Jean Rafa in Montreal, and Jean Fuschino in Quebec city who without knowing it threw the first balls in 1955."
" From that time PÈtanque florished until the 11th World Championships in QuÈbec city in September 1975; when the international community made their first official Cross-Atlantic Championship."
" With a (then) record participation of countries were Belgium,Canada, Spain, USA, France (A et B), Great Britan,Italy, Marco, Monaco, Swiss, Tunisia and even observators from Venenuela."
" The title was won by Italy (Carioli, Pau, Serando) before France B and France A; with Canada in fourth, grace to the talent of the young Sylvestre`s brothers "
Last year one of these founder Pierre Sylvestre was on the Canadian team at the World Competition.
In another book of Jean Rafa "Petanque au QuÈbec" he writes after discouvering the pÈtanque players in QuÈbec city;
" We met each other and it was decided that the montreal players would join the Quebec players under the banner of `Federation Canadianne Bouliste Inc.`
" The first competition was held on the 15th July 1956 at Parc Lafontaine in MontrÈal. This Sunday, saw 32 triplets play late into the night and there were so many spectators that the Montreal police had to be requested to free the playing area for the finals.
The next year, 1957, Canada was on the internation scene with a team at Belguin and 5 years later Jean was on the Canadian team which presented at the North Americian Championships at San Francisco.

If you area true francophile you will need this. OBUT has in their wisdom created a "Tour de France" Boule set. Mais Oui!
On Sunday 19 February 2012, I shot a boule and it made a metallic ping and broke perfectly in half when my bloues hit it. It seems that there had been a crack in the boules that had allowed some water to corrode the weakness. Is is a JB competition boule.
Byron Putman discovered petanque some two years ago and fell in love, head over heels. Then decided to analyze every angle of the game, including its development in the USA. He started clubs in Palm Springs, CA and in Lake Oswego, OR. And wrote a book about it, aptly named "Pétanque - The greatest game you never heard of!"
